The most common method of extracting shale oil is by surface mining. The in situ combustion process is used for extracting shale oil from far below the surface.

Numerous deposits of oil shale, ranging from Precambrian to Tertiary age, are present in the United States. The two most important deposits are in the Eocene Green River Formation in Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah and in the Devonian-Mississippian black shales in the eastern United States. Shale oil refers to hydrocarbons that are trapped in formations of shale rock. Fracking is a process that oil companies use to drill down into the layers of shale and open up the rock formations so Shale oil production makes the United States more energy independent. Storing barrels of shale oil helps prices remain more stable. Shale oil extraction (fracking) benefits from innovative drilling techniques. Fracking causes ecological damage to the environment. The shale oil extraction revolution has dramatically impacted U.S. oil and gas production. By cost-effectively unlocking the hydrocarbons trapped in these tight rock formations through fracking,

The Eocene Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming contains the largest oil shale deposits in the world. Oil shale, despite the name, does not actually contain oil, but rather a type of organic matter called kerogen, a precursor of oil that is converted to a type of crude oil when heated to about 450 – 500° C. It’s important to point out that neither of these processes are related to producing “shale oil” through hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking. Enefit’s Utah Project will entail conventional mining of oil shale and then processing of the rock at the mine site to produce oil. Once the kerogen is removed from the rock, the spent shale will be returned to the mine site and the land will be re-contoured and re-vegetated. Why Do We Need Oil Shale?

One of the many questions asked today is why do we need shale oil? Oil shale. Formation of oil shale. Australian Deposits Torbanite Tasmanite shale oil resource can be transformed into liquid hydrocarbons by mining, crushing,  However, in Utah's oil-shale deposits, much of the kerogen-bearing rock is close to the surface and therefore has not yet generated hydrocarbons.
